Life in the 21st century involves regular exposure to many different types of mass media and popular culture. Bright bold colours are beamed at us every day through billboard advertisements, neon signs, television sets, and movie screens. Text trying to grab our attention appears everywhere from tabloid magazines and comic books to printed posters and advertising.
Inspired by these times we live in; I create paintings that are a shimmering colourful collage of references to pop culture and mass media. Mixing throughout my work are cartoon monsters, and speech and thought bubbles containing quotes from popular culture in the media. I enjoy the unintentional humour that can often be found in many sensational forms of “low culture” such as tabloid headlines, advertising and horror movies, and I hope to bring this sense of humour to the viewer through the visual experience of painting.
